Stars get first victory, defeat Capitals on Seguin OT goal

WASHINGTON -- Tyler Seguin scored 43 seconds into overtime to give the Dallas Stars their first win of the season, 4-3 against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Tuesday.

Seguin took a pass from Alexander Radulov on a 2-on-1 and slid the puck past goalie Braden Holtby to win it.
"We knew that those guys got caught for a long shift, and it was a broken play in the middle, (and) we ended up going 2-on-1," Radulov said. "The D-man was sliding. I hear Seguin] all the way. He was going far post. I just needed to get it through."

With Holtby pulled for the extra attacker, Nicklas Backstrom tied the game 3-3 for the Capitals with 31 seconds left in the third period.
Nick Caamano scored his first NHL goal at 12:03 of the third to give Dallas a 3-2 lead.
Roope Hintz scored his fourth goal in four games, and Ben Bishop made 29 saves for Dallas (1-3-0), which lost each of its first three games by one goal.

Trailing 2-1 after the second period, Stars coach Jim Montgomery turned things over to his players.
"... I turned to (captain) Jamie Benn and I said, 'Coaches aren't going in. It's your locker room. If we're going to do something, you've got to will these guys out of this,'" Montgomery said. "And I don't know what he said, but credit to those guys because our third period was our best period."
Evgeny Kuznetsov and John Carlson scored, and Holtby made 22 saves for Washington (2-0-2), which lost 3-2 in overtime to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.
"I think overall we've got to be better 3-on-3," Backstrom said. "Got to be a little bit better with the puck, smarter with the puck. We can't leave [Holtby] out to dry like we have been, those two goals 3-on-3."

The Capitals took a 1-0 lead at 4:49 of the first period when Kuznetsov scored on a backhand from just inside the right face-off circle.
"You know I never care about goals. I'd rather have a win and be happy tomorrow than that goal," said Kuznetsov, who was making his season debut after serving a three-game suspension for inappropriate conduct during the offseason. "But that's kind of nice. I'm not going to lie. It's nice to score right away."
The Stars tied it 1-1 at 1:59 of the second period when Jamie Oleksiak intercepted a pass by Lars Eller in the Dallas zone and passed ahead to Hintz, who scored over Holtby's left shoulder.
Holtby kept it tied when he made a sliding save against Mattias Janmark on a 2-on-1 at 15:32.
Carlson made it 2-1 with a shot from along the right boards at 15:55.
Radulov tied it 2-2 when he poked in a loose puck at 7:53 of the third.
"I think we've been putting a lot of pressure on ourselves to get out of this," Seguin said. "There's been tense times, there's been good times, but to get the full two points is nice. We put all this behind us, and let's get rolling here."

Washington was 0-for-5 on the power play after going 0-for-6 against Carolina.
"We've got to start blowing the game open a little bit," Carlson said. "Maybe just trying to be a little too cute, trying to be too perfect in a sense. Those are big opportunities in the game."
