HAT TRICKS POWER CANADIENS, HURRICANES

Montreal Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty (3-0-3) and Carolina Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho (3-1-4) had hat tricks to lead their teams to victory:
* Pacioretty had his sixth NHL hat trick, second this season, to help the Atlantic Division-leading Canadiens to their 30th win of the season (30-14-7, 67 points). Pacioretty is second in the NHL with 24 goals, four behind the Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby (28) for the League lead.
* Aho had his first NHL hat trick to help the Hurricanes end a five-game losing streak (0-5-0). At 19 years, 189 days, Aho became the youngest player in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers history with a hat trick and the first rookie to do so with the club since Erik Cole on Dec. 21, 2001 against the Atlanta Thrashers. Aho is third among NHL rookies with 15 goals this season, behind Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine who have 23 apiece.

FILLING THE NET

A total of 98 goals were scored in 14 games Tuesday, an average of 7.0 goals per game. That includes eight games with at least seven combined goals. Highlights from the three highest-scoring games:
* The Dallas Stars scored five times in the first period en route to victory to improve to 2-0-2 during their six-game homestand. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Stars scored five goals in the first period for the first time since relocating to Dallas in 1993-94. The last time the Stars/Minnesota North Stars scored five times in the first period was in an 8-6 defeat of the Los Angeles Kings on Dec. 21, 1988.
* Seth Jones (2-0-2) had his first multigoal game with the Columbus Blue Jackets, who built a 6-0 lead before holding off a New York Rangers rally in a win at Madison Square Garden and move within two points of first place in the NHL (33-12-4, 70 points). Alex Wennberg (1-2-3) had three points for the second time in his past four games to establish NHL career highs for goals, assists and points in a season (9-34-43 in 49 GP).
* The Ottawa Senators built a 4-2 lead, but the Florida Panthers scored four straight goals, including the go-ahead goal by Jonathan Marchessault, to improve to 2-0-1 in their past three games. Marchessault extended his point streak to five games (2-3-5) and ranks second on the Panthers with 32 points in 44 games. He had eight goals and 19 points in his first 49 NHL games.
