Cameron was fired as coach of the Ottawa Senators on April 12. The Senators were 38-35-9 and finished fifth in the Atlantic Division last season, eight points behind the third-place Detroit Red Wings. He replaced Paul MacLean during the 2014-15 season and coached the Senators to Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Cameron went 70-50-17 in parts of two seasons with Ottawa.
"With Dave, one of the things I was looking for in that box is another head coach that's been through the rigors of the NHL as a head guy in a Canadian market," Flames coach Glen Gulutzan said. "I wanted that experience. I wanted a guy who has been in my shoes, a guy who can challenge you on certain things that sometimes as coaches you get bullheaded and you get going in your own way. You want somebody there to say, 'Hey, hey ... this is how it's worked better for me.' That was an important thing to have Dave next to me on that bench. It gives you a lot of experience."
The Flames also hired Paul Jerrard as an assistant to fill out Gulutzan's staff. Gulutzan was hired June 17.
"I think there's a lot of good pieces here, and I think the management has done a great job to add some pieces here with the free agency," Jerrard said. "So we look forward to just working with the group and getting to know the group and connecting with the group and pushing it forward. It's a young group; I think it's an enthusiastic group that can skate and I think we can make some things happen."
The hires join assistant coach Martin Gelinas, goalie coach Jordan Sigalet and video coach Jamie Pringle.
