The tournament will be held Dec. 26 to Jan. 5, 2024 in Gothenburg, Sweden.
"It's a great honor to have the chance to represent our country on the international stage," Carle said. "I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead and building a team that will give us an opportunity to bring home a gold medal."
The 33-year-old is 116-53 with 13 ties in five seasons as coach at the University of Denver, and won the NCAA championship in 2022. This season the Pioneers were 30-10 and finished first in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, but lost 2-0 to Cornell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to taking over as coach, he was an assistant at Denver for five seasons (2013-14 to 2017-18) under current Boston Bruins coach Jim Montgomery.
Among the NHL players Carle has helped develop are New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield, Anaheim Ducks forward Troy Terry, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Danton Heinen and Colorado Avalanche forward Logan O'Connor.
"We're thrilled to have David leading our national junior team," said John Vanbiesbrouck, general manager of the 2024 U.S. National Junior Team and assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. "He's done a terrific job at Denver and is one of the bright young coaches in our country."
Carle was a defenseman whose playing career ended at age 18 when he was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the walls of the heart. The Tampa Bay Lightning selected him in the seventh round (No. 203) of the 2008 NHL Draft, knowing Carle never would play for them; he instead spent four seasons as a student assistant with the Denver University men's hockey team, starting him on his coaching path.
The United States won the bronze medal at the 2023 WJC in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It last won the tournament in 2021.
