David Reinbacher signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old defenseman was the No. 5 pick in the 2023 Upper Deck NHL Draft, the highest Austria-born player selected at his position.
Reinbacher (6-foot-2, 194 pounds) had 22 points (three goals, 19 assists) in 46 games in National League, the top men's professional league in Switzerland. It was the second-most points by an under-19 defenseman in National League history behind Roman Josi (24 points; seven goals, 17 assists in 42 games in 2008-09). Reinbacher also played for Austria at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2023 IIHF World Championship.
