The forward scored at 8:31 of double overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 victory against the New York Rangers at Olympia Stadium on April 23, 1950, against Hall of Fame goalie Chuck Rayner.
One other player has repeated Babando's feat: Tony Leswick scored in overtime for the Red Wings four seasons later to win Game 7 of the 1954 Final against the Montreal Canadiens.
Babando had 159 points (86 goals, 73 assists) in 351 NHL games and six seasons with the Boston Bruins, Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks (then two words) and Rangers. He had six points (three goals, three assists) in 17 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
His best season was in 1950-51, when he had 37 points (18 goals, 19 assists) in 70 games with the Black Hawks. He had 34 points (23 goals, 11 assists) in 60 games with the Bruins in 1947-48 and was second in voting for the Calder Trophy as the best rookie in the NHL. The award was won by Red Wings forward Jim McFadden.
