Red Wings defeat Coyotes on Glendening shorthanded goal

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Luke Glendening scored shorthanded to break a tie with 3:24 remaining, and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 at Gila River Arena on Thursday.
Martin Frk, Henrik Zetterberg and Frans Nielsen scored for the Red Wings (3-1-0), and Jimmy Howard made 33 saves. Detroit killed five of six Arizona power plays.

"I've said it lots, but in this league, special teams and goaltending is a huge factor in wins and losses," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "Everybody is so close and the games are so tight, and certainly I thought that was the difference in the game."

Clayton Keller scored two goals for the Coyotes (0-3-1), and Max Domi had two assists.
"It's tough to swallow," Keller said. "It's tough to lose like that, especially late there when we were all over them."
Arizona goalie Louis Domingue entered the game to begin the second period, replacing Antti Raanta, who left because of a lower-body injury after making a save on all nine shots he faced. Domingue made 20 saves.
Keller scored on the power play at 6:12 of the second period off a scramble in front of the net to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.

Frk tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal from the top of the left circle at 11:37, but Keller put Arizona in front 2-1 with 1:44 remaining in the period.
Zetterberg scored with 42 seconds left in the second to tie it 2-2 when his shot off a pass from Dylan Larkin from behind the net trickled between Domingue's pads.
"Obviously, he wants a couple of those goals back," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said.
Larkin had two assists.
Nielsen scored into an empty net to make it 4-2 with 1:34 remaining.

Goal of the game

Just after Howard made a right-pad save on Keller with the Coyotes on the power play, Larkin gathered the puck behind the net, carried it into the Arizona zone and passed from the left face-off circle across the slot to Glendening for a shot that went past Domingue.

Save of the game

Howard preserved a 2-2 tie when he denied Anthony Duclair twice late in the third period. Duclair cut across defenseman Xavier Ouellet in the slot and snapped a shot from the right hash marks, but Howard closed his pads to make the save at 14:07 and stopped Duclair's rebound attempt.

Highlight of the game

Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson found Domi with a stretch pass as Domi skated through the neutral zone. Domi held the puck on the left wing as Keller crossed the blue line before slipping a soft pass to him for a one-timer from the top of the circle at 18:16 of the second.

Frk and Keller each have three goals, tied for second among NHL rookies with Jesper Bratt of the New Jersey Devils behind Sonny Milano of the Columbus Blue Jackets (four). … Detroit is 2-1-0 on a four-game road trip that ends Friday. … Raanta also missed the season opener at the Anaheim Ducks on Oct. 5 and all but two periods of the preseason with a lower-body injury. Tocchet said this injury is not the same as the previous one but did not provide any further update. … Red Wings defenseman Mike Green had two assists. His eight assists are tied for the NHL lead with Washington Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov.
