DET@CAR: Erne nets Red Wings 20,000th franchise goal

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Adam Erne, Filip Zadina and Sam Gagner scored in the third period when the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 at PNC Arena on Monday.

Jonathan Bernier made 37 saves, and Michael Rasmussen and Valtteri Filppula each had two assists for the Red Wings (15-23-6), who swept the two-game set after a 5-4 shootout win on Saturday.
"I thought we played tight defense," Detroit captain Dylan Larkin said. "We were in a 0-0 game going into the third, and a lot of times this year you've seen that go the other way. But we have to start finding ways to win those games, and we did tonight."
Jordan Staal had an assist playing his 1,000th NHL game, and Nino Niederreiter scored for the Hurricanes (27-10-4). James Reimer made 27 saves.
"This was not good obviously," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "Normally when we lose, I can say, 'Give the other team credit.' No disrespect to the other team, they played hard. But this is the one game where I'm like, that was gross. To a man."

The Red Wings took a 1-0 lead 24 seconds into the third period. Rasmussen drove the right wing and circled the net before making a backhand feed across the crease to Erne for a tap-in at the right post.
"[Erne] has got a of skill, but he plays the right way," Larkin said. "He plays hard. He plays with (Luke Glendening and Darren Helm), who play the right way every night, and you see results. It's great that he's putting the puck in the net this year."
The goal was upheld on a challenge for offside, resulting in a delay of game penalty for Carolina.
The Red Wings made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 2:34. Zadina finished a quick sequence of passes from Larkin and Rasmussen from the right face-off circle.
"Zadina has been more dangerous on a regular basis," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "That's a great shot that he got. [Rasmussen] has done a really good job. Both those guys have taken big strides and hopefully they continue over the last 12 games."

Niederreiter followed his centering pass and scored from low in the right to cut Detroit's lead to 2-1 at 13:54.
Gagner scored an empty-net goal with 55 seconds remaining for the 3-1 final.
"We were trying to be too cute, too fancy at our blue line and their blue line, and that backfires quickly," Niederreiter said. "They're a hard-working team and they definitely outworked us."
Bernier, whose name surfaced in trade rumors ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline on Monday, made a stick save on Vincent Trocheck's breakaway before stopping Warren Foegele's rebound shot with his right pad at 15:05.
"You look at Jonathan Bernier as example No. 1," Larkin said. "He was stressed, and he wants to be a Red Wing, and he showed it tonight. [It was] an incredible performance. He showed how professional he is no matter what he is facing. He was our rock tonight, and he is most nights he's in [goal]."
