Red Wings team scope

Defenseman Daniel Renouf, 22, will make his NHL debut for the Detroit Red Wings, who have points in five of their past six games (4-1-1) after a 3-2 overtime victory against the Minnesota Wild on Sunday. Renouf will take the place of defenseman Niklas Kronwall. "He [Kronwall] has got a knee issue that we've got to be cognizant of, so he won't play today," coach Jeff Blashill said. "We hope to have him the next day, but we'll make that determination [Tuesday]." Renouf, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Red Wings on March 10, 2016, scored 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) in 58 games with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. "I think I started out a little slow and that helped me deal with adversity," Renouf said. "I have just been growing my game. I think I've taken in a lot for my first season and I'm happy with it so far." Blashill said he likely will juggle his defensive pairings during the game, with Renouf starting alongside Robbie Russo, who has played 11 NHL games. Forward Darren Helm, who has missed the past four games because of a leg injury, is a game-time decision. The game Monday is a makeup for the Dec. 19 game in Raleigh that was postponed because of ice issues. The teams will play again in Raleigh on Tuesday.

Hurricanes team scope

The Carolina Hurricanes have points in 10 straight games (7-0-3) and are five points behind the Boston Bruins for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference. "We're getting some questions answered as we move along," coach Bill Peters said. "We're down to nine games left. We begin a new five-game segment today with four of them at home, so we have to take advantage of that." Forward Jeff Skinner has played a big role in the resurgence with seven goals in his past five games to reach the 30-goal plateau for the third time in seven NHL seasons. "This time of the year to go on a run, you have to have contributions from everyone," Skinner said. "We've gotten that. You have to have a combination of a lot of things, and right now we're checking off a lot of those boxes." Lucas Wallmark was recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League and will center the fourth line.
