SUNRISE, Fla. -- Alex Wennberg scored at 1:25 of overtime to give the Florida Panthers a 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings at BB&T Center on Thursday.

Frank Vatrano scored the tying goal and had an assist for the Panthers (24-9-4). Chris Driedger made 25 saves.
"It shows a lot of character from the team right here," Wennberg said. "Obviously it's not always going to be pretty and it's not always going our way, but we somehow just keep working and keep doing our part and we get rewarded and we end up getting two points and it's a huge two points."
Adam Erne and Anthony Mantha scored for the Red Wings (12-21-5). Thomas Greiss made 33 saves.
Florida swept the two-game series here and won six of the eight games against Detroit this season. This was the only game that went past regulation.
"I thought we worked hard tonight," Red Wings forward Luke Glendening said. "Greiss kept us in it and gave us a chance."
Florida has won four in a row following a three-game losing streak. All four victories have come with forwards Aleksander Barkov and Patric Hornqvist out because of injury, and two after defenseman Aaron Ekblad was lost for 12 weeks with a broken left leg.
"These are big wins for us," Driedger said. "We have a lot of key pieces out. I think it says a lot about our team. We're a hard-working group and nothing really gets us down. We're down 2-1 there in the third period and we just go to work. We're not nervous. You can tell the guys have poise out there."
Mantha gave Detroit a 2-1 lead at 6:07 of the third period when he came in alone on Driedger and beat him with a high shot to the stick side.
"I wasn't really happy with the goal I let in," Driedger said. "I thought I was a bit deep on it. To get bailed out from the boys like that is always a treat."
Vatrano tied it 2-2 at 10:39 with a power-play goal when he one-timed Carter Verhaeghe's pass to the right circle. The goal came with Jon Merrill in the box for a delay of game penalty he took seven seconds after serving a slashing penalty.
Eight of Vatrano's goals this season have been scored in the third period or overtime.
"That's just the way they're going in for me right now," he said. "It's good to get that goal to tie the game up and a good play all around. But it seems that's the way it's going this year. But it's good to help the team out, and everyone stepped up tonight."

Erne gave Detroit a 1-0 lead at 4:21 of the first period with a tip in the high slot off a pass-shot from the point by Troy Stecher.
Noel Acciari tied it 1-1 at 11:55 after Verhaeghe deked Greiss past the goal line before passing the puck back to the front of the net.

"It's been a very important stretch for us," Panthers coach Joel Quenneville said. "I liked how we competed in the games. We're sticking with it. Games have been close for the most part. Tonight coming back in the third period in a hard game. They worked hard and finding way to stay with it. And big power-play goal off a face-off, and nice goal in overtime. We're competing."
NOTES: Florida forward Jonathan Huberdeau played his 573rd game, tying defenseman Robert Svehla for third in Panthers history behind forwards Stephen Weiss (654) and Radek Dvorak (613). ... Forward Carter Verhaeghe had two assists and led Florida skaters with 24:19 of ice time.
