Red Wings top Panthers in OT for first win of season

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Gustav Nyquist scored at 3:44 of overtime and the Detroit Red Wings ended the longest losing streak in their history at the start of a season with a 4-3 win against the Florida Panthers at BB&T Center on Saturday.

Nyquist scored on a breakaway after a Panthers turnover in the neutral zone. He beat goalie Michael Hutchinson with a wrist shot low to the glove side for his fifth NHL career overtime goal. The Red Wings (1-5-2) lost their first seven games this season.

"It felt good to score there for sure, to get that first one out of the way," Nyquist said. "Hopefully we can build off this one."
Jimmy Howard made 34 saves, including against Mike Matheson's breakaway in overtime for the Red Wings, who became the last team in the NHL this season to win a game.
"It's huge for us," Howard said. "It's great to come in here and see smiles after the game. We all needed this."

Nyquist, Dennis Cholowski and Dylan Larkin each had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings. Thomas Vanek scored and Frans Nielsen had two assists.
Panthers forward Mike Hoffman tied the game 3-3 with 1:16 left in the third period when he beat Howard with a wrist shot from the top of the left face-off circle.
"Late in the game, it's usually a fluky one that ties games up," Hoffman said. "I just tried to throw it on net and I don't think he saw it."
Nick Bjugstad and Keith Yandle each had a goal and an assist for the Panthers (1-2-3), who were 0-for-5 on the power play. Hutchinson made 27 saves.
"If we played three good periods, we match up against anyone," Bjugstad said. "We have to figure that out."
The Panthers led 2-0 before power-play goals by Cholowski and Vanek 18 seconds apart in the second period tied the game. Cholowski scored on a 5-on-3 at 5:47 to make it 2-1 and Vanek beat Hutchinson with a slap shot to tie the it 2-2 at 6:05.

"Huge. Huge," Larkin said. "We were bang-bang and it's 2-2. It's a new game."
Larkin gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead at 7:50 when he redirected Darren Helm's pass into an open net.
Aleksander Barkov was awarded a penalty shot at 1:49 of the third period, but the puck bounced over his stick when he tried to make a quick deke.
Yandle gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead at 7:34 of the first period before Bjugstad made it 2-0 at 16:10 when he scored on a wrist shot off a face-off.

The Red Wings had a goal overturned at 9:31 of the first period when the Panthers won a coach's challenge for goalie interference.
The Panthers were playing on the second end of a back-to-back after defeating the Washington Capitals 6-5 in a shootout at Capital One Arena on Friday.
"We knew it wasn't going to be easy game after 2-0, but we just can't do that; you can't give them a 5-on-3 and change the momentum," Panthers coach Bob Boughner said. "I'm not happy about that. Back-to-back games, I thought that we looked tired toward the second half of the game, but we found a way to get a point and easily could have been two."
