Forward Thomas Vanek will not play after injuring his ankle during a 2-1 loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. The Red Wings will try to end a three-game losing streak (0-2-1). "I thought we did lots of good stuff," coach Jeff Blashill told the Detroit Free Press following the game. "I thought our competition was very good. We weren't perfect. There's certainly areas to correct tomorrow, but that's also a good team. They've got something to say about it too. I thought we created enough chances to win, but I also thought we got good enough goaltending to win. In the end, we didn't come away with any points. That's very disappointing. What we have to do is replicate a similar effort tomorrow. But we need to find a way to get the two points." Rookie Jared Coreau is expected to start after Petr Mrazek made 37 saves against Columbus. The Red Wings are seven points out of the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.

Wild team scope

Goaltender Devan Dubnyk, whose 30 wins are tied with Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets for the NHL lead, will start after making 26 saves in a 2-1 shootout victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday. "I think we're probably going to see a lot more games like [the Tampa Bay game] down the stretch," Dubnyk said after practice Saturday. "I think that the depth that we have in here and the ability of just about anyone in our lineup to make a big play at any time, that kind of allows us to get ahead in those games and to win those games." It's the third of an eight-game homestand for the Wild, the longest in their history. Minnesota, 12-3-1 in its past 16 games, has a three-point lead on the Chicago Blackhawks for first place in the Central Division with three games in hand. It is 18-6-1 and has outscored its opponents 84-51 at Xcel Energy Center.

Brodin, who has not played since Jan. 17 because of a broken finger, was medically cleared to practice in full Saturday but remains at least a week away from returning to the lineup. … Kronwall (lower body) and Nielsen (upper body) returned Saturday after missing three games each.
