MONTREAL -- Paul Byron scored his first NHL hat trick, and the Montreal Canadiens won their fifth straight game, 10-1 against the Detroit Red Wings at Bell Centre on Saturday.

It was the most goals by Montreal in a game since a 10-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Dec. 10, 2016.
Alex Galchenyuk had four assists for the Canadiens (13-12-3), his first four-point game in the NHL.

Montreal had lost five straight (0-3-2) before its longest winning streak of the season.

"We knew inside the locker room, we keep talking about it, keep believing it, but we were getting frustrated because the result wasn't there," Galchenyuk said. "And now that the result is there you feel that confident. But at the same time, you can see how quickly things change. We lost seven in a row at the beginning [of the season], now we've won five in a row and we never want to feel the way that we felt at the beginning of the year."
Nicolas Deslauriers, Jacob de la Rose and Daniel Carr each had a goal and two assists, Charles Hudon had a goal and an assist, and Brendan Gallagher, Jordie Benn and Andrew Shaw scored for the Canadiens, who have outscored Detroit 16-4 in the past two games.
"We're feeling good about tonight but we can't forget where we were a week ago and where we sat in the standings, and can't get too high on ourselves and start to think maybe we're a little bit better than what we are," Byron said. "There's a reason why we've had success playing the way we have this week and we can't stray away from that."
Carey Price made 22 saves in his fifth straight win, all during the Montreal winning streak, which began with a victory against the Buffalo Sabres on Nov. 25 in his return from a lower-body injury. He lost his shutout at 9:46 of the third period when Luke Glendening scored to make it 8-1.
Detroit (10-12-5) is 0-4-3 during a seven-game losing streak, including a 6-3 home loss to the Canadiens on Thursday.

"It's an embarrassment," Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "I don't really know where to start. I've played professional hockey for 20 years now and I don't think I've ever been a part of anything that happened here tonight.
"You don't want to be in this situation. You basically embarrassed everyone that played with the Winged Wheel tonight and we have to live with that."
Petr Mrazek made 20 saves on 25 shots before being replaced by Jimmy Howard at 13:43 of the second period after Hudon scored at 4-on-3 to make it 5-0. Howard made four saves on nine shots.
Byron scored at 5:22 of the first period for a 1-0 lead, and Deslauriers scored 32 seconds later to make it 2-0.
The Canadiens scored four goals in the second, including Byron's second of the game to make it 3-0 at 1:51, and his third of the game to make it 6-0 at 15:38.
De la Rose made it 4-0 at 4:48 of the second.
Gallagher made it 7-0 1:01 into the third before Benn made it 8-0 at 6:02.
Carr made it 9-1 at 11:52, and Shaw scored at 16:26.

"Honestly, right now, right after the game, I don't even know what to tell you, to be honest with you," Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. "It's just fuming inside of yourself. In saying that, we can't just sit back and feel sorry for ourselves. It doesn't work like that.
"We keep talking about [how] hard work is going to get you out of it. Today, it wasn't hard work. It was embarrassing."
