Anisimov, Senators hand Red Wings fifth straight loss

OTTAWA -- Artem Anisimov scored twice and had the deciding goal in the shootout for the Ottawa Senators in a 4-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday.

"When he's on, like he was] tonight, every time he touched the puck [it] looked like he'd score," Senators coach D.J. Smith said. "In overtime, he had it, he was dangerous."
Anisimov finished a backhand deke five-hole on Red Wings goalie Jonathan Bernier in the second round of the shootout.

"The puck crossed three times, the goal line, no?" Anisimov joked when asked if he would call his performance a hat trick.

Scott Sabourin scored, and Marcus Hogberg made 25 saves and did not allow a goal on all three attempts in the shootout for the Senators (23-31-12).
"A lot of our guys tonight, I didn't think had great legs," Smith said. "This was, I think, our 11th game in 19 days. That puts an end to that [stretch], but we worked right wire to wire. Maybe our first period we weren't great, but we still found a way."
Dylan Larkin had a goal and an assist, and Bernier made 36 saves for the Red Wings (15-47-5), who have lost five in a row (0-4-1).

"We took a step forward," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "We were better in certain areas than we've been. We can still be better, for sure, but we took some steps forward. We need to win, so it was disappointing not to get the win, but it was certainly a better effort than the last couple nights."
Frans Nielsen tapped in a cross-crease pass from Adam Erne on a 2-on-2 rush to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 3:59 of the first period.

Larkin scored with a wrist shot from the slot to make it 2-0 at 6:59 of the second period.
"We wanted to have some jump tonight and I thought we did," Larkin said. "We started well, 2-0. We just can't find ways to take our foot off the gas like we did tonight. It starts with us staying out of the box; we didn't do that tonight, myself included."
Anisimov's wrist shot from the top of the right face-off circle beat Bernier glove side on the power play to cut it to 2-1 at 13:42.

Sabourin tied it 2-2 when his own rebound bounced off the shaft of his stick and off Bernier's back at 1:48 of the third period. It was Sabourin's first goal since Oct. 2 in the opening game of the season.
Anisimov one-timed a cross-ice pass from Jayce Hawryluk to give Ottawa its first lead, 3-2 at 6:09.
"We never gave up," Anisimov said. "We stayed with it all game long. We tried to play simple, get the puck deep and go forecheck and create turnovers and create chances."
Sam Gagner tipped a Filip Hronek point shot on the power play to tie it 3-3 at 7:46. It was Gagner's first goal with the Red Wings after being acquired Monday before the NHL Trade Deadline.

"Some nights after a goal we kind of stop playing," Bernier said. "But I thought our compete level for 65 minutes was good. And then you get into the shootout and anything can happen."
