Orlov, Capitals rally for OT victory against Red Wings

WASHINGTON --Dmitry Orlov scored with 22 seconds left in overtime, and the Washington Capitals rallied for a 4-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Capital One Arena on Monday.

Orlov won it with a one-timer from above the right face-off circle after a pass from Marcus Johansson.
Nic Dowd scored twice in 11 seconds and had an assist, and Erik Gustafsson had a goal and an assist for the Capitals (17-13-4), who have won seven of their past eight games. Charlie Lindgren made 16 saves in his eighth straight start.
''I don't know if we've had one of those (kind of games) in our building this year,'' Dowd said. ''To come from behind and then come from behind again the very next shift and then win in overtime, especially like that … that was one of our biggest crowds of the year. That felt really good for our team.''
Alex Ovechkin (800 NHL goals) did not score in his third attempt to tie Gordie Howe (801) for second on the all-time goals list. Wayne Gretzky leads with 894.
Howe played the first 25 of his 26 NHL seasons and scored 786 goals with the Red Wings before retiring for the first time in 1971. His sons, Marty and Mark, were in attendance and met with Ovechkin after the game.
"We're here supporting 'Ovi,' and it's fun to be in a rink," Mark Howe said during second intermission. "And you can just tell by the atmosphere and watching Ovi, I can tell he's a little nervous. The Howe boys are in town, a lot of pressure on him. It's fun to watch. It's part of hockey history, so it's nice to be a part of."

Ville Husso made 38 saves for the Red Wings (13-11-7), who have lost six straight (0-4-2).
"Probably any other time in the season this is a pretty good point on the road," Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. "The fact that we're on a [rough] stretch leaves you a little bit frustrated, even in overtime. We get the Grade-A, inner-slot chance (by Filip Hronek), we put a dent in the crossbar. Theirs goes post-in from outside the scoring area."
David Perron gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 7:30 of the first period when he received a pass from Michael Rasmussen and lifted a backhand over Lindgren's right shoulder. It was Perron's 10th goal of the season.
Oskar Sundqvist scored a power-play goal at 15:36. Joe Veleno passed to Jonatan Berggren behind the goal line, and Berggren sent it in front to Sundqvist to make it 2-0.
"We played much more of our identity [tonight], hard to play against," Detroit captain Dylan Larkin said. "We forechecked hard, we battled. It was like a playoff game tonight."
Dowd, who missed a 5-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday due to a lower-body injury, cut it to 2-1 at 15:35 of the second period when he took a pass from Ovechkin and scored on a wrist shot from the high slot, then tied it 2-2 at 15:46 after the ensuing face-off when he redirected Nick Jensen's feed.
"Just some really good stuff by a lot of guys and to see 'Dowder' score a couple, it was great to see," Lindgren said. "He's a guy that works extremely hard. He's a great guy in the room. Thought he played excellent tonight after not playing last game."

Lucas Raymond gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead when he converted a pass from Andrew Copp during a 2-on-1 rush at 4:49 of the third period.
Gustafsson tied it 3-3 at 5:59 off a pass across the slot from Lars Eller. Each of his four goals this season have come in the past two games after he had a hat trick Saturday.
Ovechkin nearly scored No. 801 when his backhand hit the post during a power play at 11:28 of second period, then had a wrist shot from the slot denied by Husso with 2:20 left in the third.
"It's just like any other time you play him; he's going to get his chances," Larkin said. "Husso was really good against him tonight. They were in our zone a lot, they generated a lot of offense tonight. We just tried to stay tight to him and not give him time and space to shoot the puck."
NOTES: Darcy Kuemper served as Lindgren's backup; it was the first time the Capitals goalie was in uniform since he sustained an upper-body injury Dec. 3. … Dowd became the third player in Washington history to score two goals in 11 seconds or fewer, joining Stephen Leach (10 seconds on Nov. 23, 1990) and Dennis Maruk (11 seconds on Dec. 16, 1982). … The Capitals sent defenseman Lucas Johansen to Hershey of the American Hockey League after the game. … The Red Wings are 2-7 in games decided in overtime.
