Dmitry Orlov signed a two-year, $15.5 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. It has an average annual value of $7.75 million.

The 31-year-old defenseman had 36 points (seven goals, 29 assists) in 66 regular-season games for the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals, including 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) in 23 games after he was acquired in a trade with the Capitals on Feb. 23.

"We felt that Dmitry was the best available defenseman on the free agent market," Carolina general manager Don Waddell said. "He is a versatile player with a lot of offensive upside, and this signing only strengthens our defensive group heading into next season."

Selected by Washington in the second round (No. 55) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Orlov has 273 points (64 goals, 209 assists) in 709 regular-season games for the Bruins and Capitals and 31 points (two goals, 29 assists) in 81 playoff games.

Orlov won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018.

Forward Jesper Fast signed a two-year contract ($2.4 million AAV), and goalies Frederik Andersen (two years, $3.4 million AAV) and Antti Raanta (one-year, $1.5 million) also signed to stay with the Hurricanes on Saturday.
