The Toronto Maple Leafs have won the Stanley Cup 13 times since entering the NHL in 1917. During that time, exactly three players have skated for five of Toronto's Cup-winning teams. All three appear in this one photo.
But that's only half the story.
Two of the three five-time Cup-winners are members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. One is goaltender
Turk Broda
(right), who played on Toronto's championship teams in 1942, 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951. The other Hall of Famer is center
Ted Kennedy
(No. 9). Better known as "Teeder," Kennedy was on the 1945 Cup-winners as well as Toronto's championship teams in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951.
The other is forward
Don Metz
(left), who played just 170 NHL games but had a habit of being in the right place at the right time during the playoffs.
Metz was a member of Toronto's Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1942, 1945, 1947, 1948 and 1949, despite the fact that he never played a full season with the Maple Leafs.Metz was a hero in Toronto's comeback from a 3-0 series deficit to win the Cup in 1942, then went into the military during World War II, returning in time to play on Toronto's 1945 Cup-winning team. He spent the next four seasons bouncing between the Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh of the American Hockey League but kept getting called up at the right time. (P.S. The member of the New York Rangers in the photo was forward
Pentti Lund
, the 1949 Calder Trophy winner who was a hero in New York's upset of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1950 Stanley Cup Semifinals.)
