"First coming around the corner I couldn't quite tell that it was actually the players," Fong said. "So I was thinking maybe it was some of the (Ducks fan group) Orange Alliance or something like that. And I saw the signs and I thought 'Oh my gosh how neat. Those are really, really cool.' And it wasn't until I made it to center ice, again because I was trying to keep an eye on the ice, when I saw (Getzlaf) in the crowd and thought 'Oh my gosh, these are the players.'"
Ducks coach Dallas Eakins welcomed Fong, saying the team was honored to have her. And emotional Fong told her story about surviving breast cancer and her journey of volunteering at the Susan G. Komen Foundation Orange Country branch.
"I got the privledge of going on the Zoom call with her at the very beginning of all this," Getzlaf said. "And just to see her face when she was able to actually come out on the ice. Given our circumstances, it's still great that she was able to go out there and enjoy this with the team."
"It's so sweet because some of the previous 21st Ducks and their family members have reached out to me," Fong said. "It's such an amazing tradition. It's just one of the classiest things that hockey does and that the Ducks do."
