The 26-year-old forward is in the final season of a five-year contract he signed with the Red Wings on Aug. 10, 2018, and could have become an unrestricted free agent.
Larkin leads Detroit in goals (22), assists (35) and points (57) in 59 games this season. He played for the Atlantic Division in the 2023 NHL All-Star Game and had six points (five goals, one assist) in two game to help the Atlantic win the 3-on-3 tournament.
"It's really nice to get it done, and it's always been where I wanted to be," Larkin said Thursday. "I'm really happy to see the -- from last year, the two guys in particular, Lucas (Raymond) and [Moritz Seider] coming in and making an impact -- the additions we've made. Obviously some tough news today (trading Tyler Bertuzzi), but I really believe the future is bright here, and I always wanted to be a part of it and always dreamed of, ever since I came into the League, of playing my whole career here and being a part of this."
Larkin was named Red Wings captain on Jan. 13, 2021, their first since Henrik Zetterberg retired Sept. 14, 2018. Detroit has had four captains in the past 36 years: Larkin, Steve Yzerman (1986-2006), Nicklas Lidstrom (2006-12) and Zetterberg (2012-18).
Selected by the Red Wings in the first round (No. 15) of the 2014 NHL Draft, Larkin has 415 points (169 goals, 246 assists) in 563 regular-season games and one goal in five Stanley Cup Playoff games.
"He's been a great leader," Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said Thursday. "Sometimes things have been uncomfortable this year, and he has acted accordingly trying to get this organization to the next level. I generally just like Dylan as a person, and I like working with him as a captain, so I was absolutely ecstatic -- like, maybe jumped athletically about two inches in the air and a fist bump, just because I know how significant that is. I just enjoy working with him and what we're trying to build here. That was exciting."
