Draisaitl scores twice in third, Oilers rally past Bruins

BOSTON-- Leon Draisaitl scored two third-period goals for the Edmonton Oilers in a 5-3 win against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Thursday.

"There's lots of things that I think we can clean up, especially in the second period," Draisaitl said. "It says a lot about our group, that we don't stop, continue to play our way and try to stick with it, even if it's not pretty. At the same time, I think there's lots of things we can improve on so we don't have to score five goals to win every game."
Cody Ceci had a goal and an assist for Edmonton (10-2-0), and Mikko Koskinen made 26 saves. Connor McDavid had an assist to extend his season-opening point streak to 12 games (24 points; nine goals, 15 assists).
David Pastrnak had a goal and an assist for Boston (6-5-0), and Linus Ullmark made 23 saves.
"We absolutely beat ourselves tonight, 100 percent," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. "We're not good enough to make some of the plays we're trying to make. That's on us to make sure we're playing the right way. ... Not everyone can be [Patrice] Bergeron's line. Not everyone can play like McDavid. We've addressed it, but clearly it's fallen on deaf ears."
Draisaitl scored at 6:22 to tie it 3-3, and at 9:26 to give the Oilers a 4-3 lead. The forward leads the NHL with 12 goals.
"Boston is a good team. They've got some high-end players there," Oilers coach Dave Tippett said. "[Draisaitl] gets up for these games. He wants to play in the real competitive games and that's where he's at his best. He was really strong tonight."

Pastrnak gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 4:45 of the first period on a 2-on-1 with Brad Marchand.
Evan Bouchard scored 44 seconds later to tie it 1-1. Draisaitl made a cross-ice pass to Bouchard, coming in from the right point, and the defenseman shot it under the crossbar.
Marchand scored on a backhand at 5:06 of the second period to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead. Bouchard blocked Pastrnak's pass to Bergeron, and Marchand was first to the loose puck in front of the crease.

Zach Hyman tied it 2-2 24 seconds later, and Brandon Carlo scored at 17:14 on a slap shot from the right point to give Boston a 3-2 lead.
Ceci scored his first goal with Edmonton at 17:41 for a 5-3 lead.
"It [stinks], especially when you feel like you have a good grasp of the game, and it slips away at the end," Ullmark said. "To be completely honest, today was just one of those days where there were some unlucky bounces. What are you going to do about it? There were some breakdowns, but it's going to happen. It's not the end of the world. It's early in the season. Learn from your mistakes and move on."
NOTES: Draisaitl scored his 210th and 211th NHL goals to pass Paul Coffey (209) for sixth in Oilers history. ... Draisaitl had his seventh game of the season with at least three points. McDavid is the next with four. ... Marchand extended his home point streak to start the season to six games. In the past 24 seasons, three Bruins have had a longer streak: Marchand (10 games in 2019-20), Pastrnak (eight in 2019-20) and Torey Krug (eight in 2018-19). ... Ceci signed with Edmonton as a free agent this offseason. ... The Bruins and Oilers celebrated the life of Colby Cave before the game with his widow, Emily Cave, participating in the ceremonial puck drop, in addition to a video honoring his career. The former NHL forward, who played for the Bruins and Oilers, died April 11, 2020, four days after he had surgery to remove a colloid cyst that was causing pressure on his brain. He was 25. Cave played 67 games from 2017-20, 23 for the Bruins and 44 for the Oilers. He scored nine points (four goals, five assists) in the NHL.
