EDM@CGY: McDavid fires puck by Rittich for a PPG

CALGARY -- Connor McDavid scored two goals, and Leon Draisaitl had four assists to extend his point streak to 11 games for the Edmonton Oilers in an 8-3 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday.

Kailer Yamamoto had a goal and an assist for the Oilers (28-18-6), who are 8-1-2 in their past 11 games and were coming off a 4-2 win against the St. Louis Blues on Friday. Mike Smith made 15 saves on 18 shots, and Mikko Koskinen made the save on all eight shots he faced.
"Every game is huge from now on," said Draisaitl, who has 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) during his streak and leads the NHL with 83 points (29 goals, 54 assists). "Every game is huge. We have to bank points. We have to do that on a constant basis."

The Flames (27-20-6) lost for the third time in four games (1-2-1), their lone win a 4-3 shootout victory against the Oilers on Wednesday. David Rittich allowed six goals on 28 shots, and Cam Talbot made 19 saves on 21 shots.
"We allowed a team that thrives on offense and putting pucks into the net, we allowed their best players to really feel it tonight, and that was the difference," Calgary captain Mark Giordano said. "They got the lead early and never looked back."

EDM@CGY: McDavid rips second goal of the game

Koskinen and Rittich finished the game after Smith and Talbot each received a game misconduct for fighting each other with 24 seconds left in the second period. Rittich had been replaced by Talbot at 3:18 of the second after McDavid scored his second of the night to put Edmonton ahead 4-1.
The teams combined for 102 penalty minutes.
"Those are fun games to play in," Smith said. "Not with all the fighting and stuff, obviously, that's part of it, but just high-intensity hockey. Especially the end of January, early February, you're playing important games. Those are important points for our team. Our guys battled hard. We were relentless tonight."
Yamamoto scored on the rebound of a sharp-angled shot by Oscar Klefbom 29 seconds into the game to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead, and Zack Kassian one-timed a pass from Josh Archibald to make it 2-0 at 1:05.
"It was a good start," Draisaitl said. "We've lost a few games against them this season, so we wanted to come out strong and come out fast. It was a good start for us."
Buddy Robinson cut the Edmonton lead to 2-1 at 12:42 when he chipped Johnny Gaudreau's return pass by Smith's blocker. It was his first NHL goal since April 7, 2016, for the Ottawa Senators.
McDavid made it 3-1 at 15:33 when he shot through a screen under Rittich's right arm on the power play.
After McDavid scored again, Matthew Tkachuk cut it to 4-2 at 4:35 on a pass from behind the net by Andrew Mangiapane, and Elias Lindholm made it 4-3 when his flip pass went in off Smith's skate at 10:14.
"It's 2-0 before the flood's even dry out there, so we're chasing the game all night," Giordano said. "I actually thought when it was 4-3 we had a good chance of getting back in this one and making it a game. Then, a couple breakdowns later, it's 6-3."
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored on a cross-slot feed from Yamamoto to make it 5-3 at 11:37, and Caleb Jones scored on a point shot through traffic to make it 6-3 at 15:58.
Sam Gagner scored on a slap shot to make it 7-3 at 13:16 of the third, and Gaetan Haas scored on a penalty shot with 1:57 remaining for the 8-3 final.
"Those are the types of games that really bring your group together," Gagner said. "Everyone stayed in the fight. Everyone was sticking up for each other. We played a great game. I think that's the main thing. Those are the types of games that really bring a group together, and we just have to keep working from here."

They said it

"That can only make our group stronger in here and better as a team. I think there's things you can get out of games. There's a lot we can take from this tonight. We stuck together. We got a big win against a good hockey team and kept moving up in the standings." -- Oilers goalie Mike Smith
"When they're getting chances, they're a really dangerous team, and we didn't do a good enough job of eliminating odd-man rushes and zone time. It felt like they had a lot of space out there tonight." -- Flames captain Mark Giordano
