EDM@TOR: McDavid, Nurse connect to lift Oilers in OT

TORONTO -- Darnell Nurse scored 17 seconds into overtime to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Monday.

Nurse won it on a 2-on-1 with a wrist shot over Michael Hutchinson's glove 10 seconds after Mike Smith made the save against Auston Matthews on a 2-on-1.
"As a team, we knew what we were capable of and we knew we were capable of getting in the win column here tonight," Nurse said. "It was just a big win for us and something to build off of into the final stretch of the season. Smith, each and every night, he's been unbelievable. He's been making big saves like he did tonight in overtime."

EDM@TOR: Archibald buries backhander on a breakaway

Nurse's goal was his 12th this season, which leads NHL defensemen.
"He's earned his confidence," Edmonton coach Dave Tippett said. "To be a really good player in this league, like you're seeing that he is, you've got to do a lot of things right. You've got to put the work in and you hope that work turns into results. I can't say enough about him. I see what goes on behind the scenes and the work he puts in, and it's so good to see him get the results."
Josh Archibald and Kyle Turris scored, and Smith made 29 saves for the Oilers (22-13-1), who were coming off a 4-3 overtime loss here Saturday and are 4-0-1 in their past five games. Connor McDavid had the primary assist on the overtime goal to extend his point streak to 11 games (seven goals, 16 assists).
Matthews and Mitchell Marner scored, and Hutchinson made 20 saves for the Maple Leafs (22-10-3), who finished 6-1-2 against Edmonton this season.
"The way we focused in and defended, I thought we did a good job here again tonight against their best people," Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. "That's important going up against the deepest opponent we're going to face in our division in terms of their forward lines, so we've got to have that level of focus every shift. That's something for us to take away for sure."
Archibald put the Oilers ahead 1-0 at 6:15 of the first period when he outraced Morgan Rielly for a loose puck and beat Hutchinson five-hole on a breakaway.

EDM@TOR: Matthews beats Smith for 2-1 lead in the 1st

Marner tied it 1-1 at 7:59, warding off defenseman Tyson Barrie before skating into the slot and beating a sprawling Smith.
Matthews gave Toronto a 2-1 lead at 11:08 of the first. He got the puck behind the net, skated out into the bottom of the right face-off circle, and shot short side over the glove of Smith.
"I thought we had some really, really good stretches especially early on in the first period where it seemed like we had all five guys in sync throughout all three zones and weren't giving them much," Matthews said. "There were some stretches where we got away from ourselves a bit and gave them opportunities and weren't strong on pucks. You could really go either way with it."
Turris tied it 2-2 at 1:20 of the third period when Adam Larsson's point shot deflected in off his knee. It was Turris' first game since March 8.
"You need [depth scoring]," Tippett said. "We got a break on Turris' goal, but I was happy for Turris. He's gone through a lot between struggling early, played a couple strong games for us, and then got quarantined for a while. If one deserved to have one go off (them), it was him, so it was good to see it go in for him. But that depth scoring, you need to have guys chip in from all over the place in tight games. McDavid and [Leon] Draisaitl are going to do their share, but the more people who can chip in, the better."
NOTES: Nurse's overtime goal was the third of his NHL career, tying him with Eric Brewer for the most by a defenseman in Oilers history … Keefe said he expects goalie Jack Campbell, who did not dress against the Oilers, to play against the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday.
