EDM WPG 10.16 recap

WINNIPEG -- Connor McDavid set an NHL record with a point on the first four Edmonton Oilers goals before Darnell Nurse scored 1:25 into overtime for a 5-4 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place on Tuesday.

McDavid, who had two goals and two assists, got a point on the Oilers' first nine goals of the season to break the record of seven set by Adam Oates with the Detroit Red Wings in 1986-87.
"You know what, it's whatever. I'm not overly proud of it," McDavid said. "I don't think it's a stat we should be proud of either. It is what it is, but we found a way to get a goal there at the end so we don't ever have to talk about it again."

Goaltender Cam Talbot made 29 saves for the Oilers (2-2-0), who trailed 4-1 at the end of the second period.
Nurse won it when he skated into the Jets zone, eluded defenseman Nikolaj Ehlers and put a wrist shot from the left face-off circle past goalie Connor Hellebuyck for his first goal of the season.

"I was trying to make a read and you know just have the confidence to try and make a play," Nurse said. "At the same time, the guys helped me out. They allowed me to skate so it was a lot of fun."
Forward Ty Rattie made it 4-2 on a centering pass from McDavid 18 seconds into the third period. McDavid then pulled the Oilers to 4-3 on the power play at 2:28 and assisted on forward Jesse Puljujarvi's tying goal at 13:39 to make it 4-4.

"They turned the pace up," Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey said. "Obviously it was tough giving up one 10 seconds [into the third period] and we kind of sat on our heels and never got back to playing our game and playing with confidence."
Forward Adam Lowry scored two goals, and defenseman Ben Chiarot and forward Mark Scheifele also scored for the Jets (3-2-1). Hellebuyck made 30 saves.

"We were out there for the tying goal, so we're frustrated," said Lowry, who gave the Jets a 2-0 lead with goals at 4:51 and 7:47 of the first period. "We have a job to do, and that's keep the puck out of the net. After the first period, I don't think we were very good."
McDavid made it 2-1 with his third of the season, a power-play goal at 12:49 of the first period.

"He's our captain, he's our leader, he's in my opinion the best player on Earth right now and he decided that he was going to will his team to a win," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said.
Chiarot restored the Jets' two-goal lead 22 seconds later with a shot from the point to make it 3-1 at 13:11.
Scheifele scored on the power play at 1:02 of the second period on a rebound to make it 4-1.

They said it

"It's good. It proves we can play with anyone. This is a team that's going to compete for the Stanley Cup again; they did last year and I would expect them to do the same. We came into a tough building and found a way to get two points and come back on them. So we feel good about it, but we have to build momentum here." -- Oilers captain Connor McDavid
"It's pretty special. You don't feel like he's having much impact on the game and he already has a goal. And then like that, there's a four-point night. It just shows you how special he is. You can't take your eye off him for a second; the speed obviously is incredible. He just makes so many little plays happen. Trying to keep him off the board is a tough challenge. You try to do the best you can. Four is obviously not a good number for our group." -- Jets forward Blake Wheeler on Oilers forward Connor McDavid
