Erik Karlsson started his day as a pirate, then he finished up trying to commandeer
the Gatorade NHL Puck Control Relay
title.

In one of the funniest moments of the 2018 GEICO NHL All-Star Skills Competition, the Ottawa Senators defenseman approaced the standing puck control stations and decided to place the puck on his stick with his hands instead of opting to flip it through like the players before him.
"(Other players) thought I was really smart for some reason," Karlsson said. "I like that and I'll take that."
Karlsson said that he believed picking up the puck was not against the rules of the event. And, by the time he reached the third puck control station, he kept dropping the biscuit anyway.
"I can't really put the stick on the puck like the other guys did. I had no idea what to do. I thought that was the best way to do it," Karlsson said. "There's no real rules, even though I couldn't really do it at the end anyway, so maybe if I get the chance to do it again next year, I'll come up with a new tactic."
Karlsson finished third. Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin tried the same thing. He also was not very successful in the event, finishing seventh.
"It's not as easy as it looks," Karlsson said.
