Facts and Figures: Matthews gets 100th NHL goal in Maple Leafs win

Auston Matthews scored his 100th and 101st goals in his 187th NHL game to power the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 6-3 win against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday.

Among players who began their NHL careers with Toronto, two reached 100 goals in fewer games played (all with the Maple Leafs) than Matthews. Reg Noble scored his 100th goal on Dec. 23, 1922, in his 112th NHL game, and Charlie Conacher scored No. 100 on Nov. 9, 1933, in his 162nd game. The only other player who began his NHL career with the Maple Leafs and scored his 100th goal within his first 200 regular-season games, all with Toronto, was Busher Jackson on Feb. 3, 1934 (200 games played).
Matthews, a 21-year-old center who was the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, has 185 points (101 goals, 84 assists).
Toronto (36-18-3, 75 points), second in the Atlantic Division, is 9-0-0 in road games against Western Conference opponents this season.

Tarasenko, Binnington help Blues to eighth straight win

Vladimir Tarasenko scored two goals and Jordan Binnington made 21 saves to help the St. Louis Blues defeat the Arizona Coyotes 4-0 at Gila River Arena for their eighth consecutive win, the longest active streak in the NHL. St. Louis (29-22-5, 63 points) moved past the Dallas Stars into third place in the Central Division.
Tarasenko extended his point streak to 10 games (nine goals, eight assists). The 27-year-old forward is the third Blues player to have a point streak of at least 10 games this season, joining center Ryan O'Reilly (10 games from Oct. 17-Nov. 11, 2018) and forward David Perron (13 games from Dec. 22, 2018-Jan. 17, 2019). This is the fourth season since entering the NHL in 1967 that St. Louis has had at least three players with a point streak of at least 10 games; it's the first since 1991-92, when Adam Oates, Brett Hull and Craig Janney each did it.
Binnington improved to 11-1-1 since making his first NHL start on Jan. 7. He has won his past seven appearances and matched the Blues record for longest winning streak by a rookie goalie, set by Brent Johnson twice (Oct. 6-Nov. 18, 2000 and Nov. 29, 2000-Jan. 1, 2001).

Lightning, Kucherov reach 90-point mark

NHL scoring leader Nikita Kucherov scored a goal and had three assists for the second straight game to help the League-leading Tampa Bay Lightning defeat the Stars 6-0 at Amalie Arena. The Lightning (43-11-4, 90 points) are 6-0-2 in their past eight games and are the first team to reach the 90-point mark this season.
Tampa Bay became the eighth team in NHL history to reach 90 points within its first 58 games in a season. The last to do so was the 2015-16 Washington Capitals (57 games); the NHL record is 56 games by the 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers.
Kucherov (92 points; 26 goals, 66 assists) became the first player in Lightning history to reach the 90-point mark in a season within his first 60 games. The 25-year-old forward is the first player in the NHL to do so since Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin in 2009-10 (90 points; 42 goals, 48 assists in 56 games).
It was Kucherov's NHL-leading sixth game with at least four points this season. He's the first player to have at least six games with at least four points in a season through games of Feb. 14 since Atlanta Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk had six in 2005-06.
Kucherov has 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in a three-game multipoint streak.

Thornton passes Selanne for 15th on NHL all-time scoring list

Joe Thornton moved past Teemu Selanne into sole possession of 15th place on the NHL's all-time scoring list when he had an assist for the San Jose Sharks in a 5-1 loss to Washington at SAP Center.
The 39-year-old forward has 1,458 points (407 goals, 1,051 assists) in 1,542 games played. Selanne had 1,457 points (684 goals, 773 assists) in 1,451 games. Thornton is nine points behind 14th-place Stan Mikita on the NHL all-time list; Mikita had 1,467 points (541 goals, 926 assists) in 1,396 games.

Kane extends streaks in Blackhawks win

Patrick Kane extended his point and assist streaks when he had one goal and two assists to help the Chicago Blackhawks defeat the New Jersey Devils 5-2 at United Center for their fifth straight home win. The Blackhawks (24-25-9, 57 points) moved within two points of the Minnesota Wild for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.
The 30-year-old forward extended his point streak to 16 games (35 points; 12 goals, 23 assists), the longest active run in the NHL. The longest point streak in the NHL this season is 17 games by Florida Panthers forward Mike Hoffman from Oct. 13-Nov. 21, 2018. Kane is the 15th different player in NHL history age 30 or older with a point streak of at least 16 games, and the first since Pascal Dupuis of the Pittsburgh Penguins (17 games from March 7-April 7, 2012).
Kane also set a Blackhawks record by getting at least one assist in 15 consecutive games, surpassing the mark set by Mikita from Nov. 26-Dec. 25, 1967. Kane is the seventh different player in NHL history with an assist streak of at least 15 games and the first since Jaromir Jagr of the Penguins had a 16-game streak from Jan. 9-Feb. 16, 2001.

Another shutout for Greiss, Islanders

Thomas Greiss made 31 saves and the Metropolitan Division-leading New York Islanders defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-0 at Nationwide Arena. The Islanders lead the NHL with seven shutouts; the only season they've had more through games played on Feb. 14 was 1975-76, when they had eight.
New York, which allowed an NHL-worst 296 goals last season, has given up a League-low 136 through 57 games. The only time in NHL history the team allowing the most goals in a season finished the following season with the fewest goals was when the Ottawa Senators gave up 114 goals in 1917-18, the League's first season, but cut that to 53 in 1918-19.
Greiss is 5-0-1 in his past six appearances, allowing three goals on 188 shots. He has three shutouts in his past five games, the first Islanders goalie to do so since Rick DiPietro from Dec. 16-26, 2006.

Athanasiou scores second penalty-shot goal of season for Red Wings

Forward Andreas Athanasiou became the first player in the NHL this season to score two goals on penalty shots when he beat goalie Anders Nilsson at 17:42 of the first period in the Detroit Red Wings' 3-2 win against the Ottawa Senators at Little Caesars Arena.
Athanasiou also scored on a penalty shot against the Calgary Flames on Jan. 2. He is the fifth Red Wings player to score multiple penalty-shot goals in his career since the penalty shot was introduced in 1934-35, joining Steve Yzerman (three), Ebbie Goodfellow (two), Gordie Howe (two) and Valtteri Filppula (two). He's the third Red Wings player since to score two penalty-shot goals in the same season, joining Yzerman in 1991-92 and Filppula in 2007-08.
The only player in NHL history to score three penalty-shot goals in one season is Pavel Bure, who did it with the Vancouver Canucks in 1997-98.
