LaBosse told NHL.com she saw the road sign on her way to work in Downtown Calgary and had to share after having a laugh. She never imagined it would reach Lucic.
"I thought I would take a quick snap to get the fans going," LaBosse told NHL.com. "When I got to work I looked down at my phone and it said 'Milan Lucic shared your story' and I was like 'What is happening?' I hadn't even had my coffee yet."
According to Daily Hive, the sign is one of a few located on Deerfoot Trail and Macleod Trail in Calgary. The city of Calgary has used humorous signs throughout the area to help reduce the number of fatalities on area highways. In December, there was one posted in honor of the Flames coach saying, "Darryl Sutter likes defensive drivers."
Shoulder checking, for the unfamiliar, is the habit of checking over your shoulder [often called a blind spot] before changing lanes. Checking in hockey is, of course, a Lucic specialty.
Lucic responded to the sign prior to Game 2 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday (10 p.m. ET; TBS, CBC, SN, TVAS2, BSSW).
"I actually didn't see it in person," Lucic said with a laugh. "I saw it on Instagram there, that's why I reposted it. I thought it was a great sign, a funny sign, that's why I decided to reshare it."
LaBrosse said she messaged Lucic thanking him for sharing her post and that her, her father and three older brothers were all huge Flames fans. She said he wrote back thanking her for the support.
"They put those signs in various spots into the core [of Calgary]," LaBrosse said. "Huge credit to the city for whoever does those signs. They are great."
Whatever it takes to keep drivers safe.
