Garret Sparks signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old goalie, the backup to Frederik Andersen, could have been a restricted free agent on July 1.
Sparks is 7-5-1 with a 3.09 goals-against average, .902 save percentage and one shutout in 14 games (13 starts) with the Maple Leafs this season. Selected by Toronto in the seventh round (No. 189) of the 2011 NHL Draft, he has a record of 13-14-2 with a 3.05 GAA and .897 save percentage in 31 games (30 starts) over two seasons with the Maple Leafs.
Last season, Sparks helped Toronto of the American Hockey League win the Calder Cup championship. He was voted the AHL's top goaltender after posting a 31-9-2 record, 1.79 goals-against average, .936 save percentage and six shutouts during the regular season. In the playoffs, he was 14-5 with a 2.22 GAA, .915 save percentage and two shutouts.
