The Vegas Golden Knights stuck with recent tradition and did not touch the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl on Monday.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly presented the trophy to Golden Knights captain Mark Stone and alternate captains Reilly Smith and Alex Pietrangelo following a 6-0 win against the Dallas Stars in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final at American Airlines Center in Dallas. Each of the three players shook Daly's hand and took a photo before being joined by the entire team for another picture.
Two teams have touched the bowl since 2007, and one was the Golden Knights in 2018. They then lost the Stanley Cup Final to the Washington Capitals in five games. The Colorado Avalanche did so last season before defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games in the Cup Final.
"We touched it a lot the first year, and it didn't work well for us," Vegas forward Jonathan Marchessault said. "Hopefully, it goes around. We've worked hard to be in that position, but that's not the one we want to touch here."
The Montreal Canadiens did not touch the bowl in 2021 but lost to the Lightning in five games in the Final. Montreal, which normally plays in the Eastern Conference, was awarded the bowl after defeating Vegas in what was called the Stanley Cup Semifinals because of the temporary divisional realignment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Golden Knights will play the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final. The Panthers swept the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final.
Of the 14 teams that did not touch the bowl in the previous 16 seasons, eight went on to win the Stanley Cup, most recently the St. Louis Blues in 2019.
"I asked the guys. I'm not a superstitious guy at all, so I was game for whatever they decided," Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. "It's their moment. If they wanted to pass it around, great. If not, that's fine by me too."
The Clarence S. Campbell Bowl has been awarded to the Western Conference champion since the 1993-94 season.
The Eastern Conference champion has been awarded the Prince of Wales Trophy since 1993-94.
