Islanders' 10-game streak vs. Rask's big blocker save

The 2019-20 NHL season had many incredible moments before it paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, and now fans can decide which one was the best.

The Greatest Moments of the NHL season … So Far have been placed into a bracket of 64 entries, and fans will vote on one matchup per day, ultimately deciding the greatest moment up until this point.

Fans can vote on Twitter and Instagram each day from noon until 10 a.m. ET the next day. Each day, the winner of that matchup will be revealed, and a new set of moments will go head-to-head.

Though fans will have the ultimate say, two NHL.com staffers will weigh in on the matchup each day to give his or her opinion on which one should advance to the next round.

In the matchup on Saturday, Andrei Svechnikov's lacrosse-style goal for the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Montreal Canadiens' ceremony for the late Henri Richard.

The matchup Sunday pits the New York Islanders extending their winning streak to 10 games with a penalty-shot goal against Boston Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask's blocker save Nov. 21.

Ten-game winning streaks are usually few and far between in professional sports, and the Islanders' stretch of victories from Oct. 12-Nov. 5 was one of the most memorable early-season storylines in the NHL. The Islanders were one of the best teams in the League over the first two months of the season, and this winning streak was the beginning of a 17-game point streak (15-0-2), the longest in their history. New York was finding so many different ways to win over this span and got an especially big lift from an unlikely source in a rare situation when rookie forward Cole Bardreau, playing in his seventh NHL game, scored his first NHL goal on a penalty shot in a 4-1 win against the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 5, marking New York's 10th straight victory. Full-extension goalie saves on an open net, like Rask made in this case, are among the best plays from the NHL highlight reel each season. But New York's string of victories was proof that its success last season under coach Barry Trotz was no fluke, and the contributions of players throughout the lineup, including Bardreau, over a double-digit span of games is enough to win this debate.

Great moments pull you out of your seat when they happen and remain lifelong memories. Rask did that Nov. 21 when he made perhaps the save of the season, lunging with the inside of his blocker to deny a shot from Evan Rodrigues of the Buffalo Sabres that appeared headed into a wide-open net. How good was the save? Boston coach Bruce Cassidy compared it to those made by Dominik Hasek, the Hockey Hall of Fame goalie known for his penchant to make unorthodox saves. Nearly five months later, I still can close my eyes and see Rask lunging for the shot, catching and then dropping it with his blocker hand, and then crashing onto his shoulder and head. Oh yeah, the Bruins won that game by one goal. Coincidence? Don't think so.
