DeBrusk interviewed by Dad vs. Hughes' first NHL goal

The 2019-20 NHL season had many incredible moments before it paused on March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, and now fans can decide which one was the best.

The Greatest Moments of the NHL season … So Far have been placed into a bracket of 64 entries, and fans will vote on one matchup per day, ultimately deciding the greatest moment up until this point.

Fans can vote on Twitter and Instagram each day from noon until 10 a.m. ET the next day. Each day, the winner of that matchup will be revealed, and a new set of moments will go head-to-head.

Though fans will have the ultimate say, two NHL.com staffers will weigh in on the matchup each day to give his or her opinion on which one should advance to the next round.

In the matchup on Monday, Mika Zibanejad's five-goal game for the New York Rangers defeated Mark Borowiecki of the Ottawa Senators stopping a possible burglary.

The matchup Tuesday pits New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes scoring his first NHL goal in his first game against his brother, fellow rookie Quinn Hughes, and the Vancouver Canucks against Boston Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk being interviewed by his father.

The DeBrusk father-son interview is arguably the best feel-good family moment of this entire bracket. That said, I'm making a case for Jack Hughes' first NHL goal because it not only had a rare family element but also a memorable on-ice accomplishment for the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. Jack was held without a goal over his first seven games. Hughes then gave the Devils a memorable moment amidst their early-season struggles (1-4-2 in first seven games) by scoring his first NHL goal against the Canucks in front of the home crowd at Prudential Center, as well as his older brother and fellow rookie, Vancouver defenseman Quinn Hughes. Quinn may have scored his first NHL goal before Jack, on Oct. 9, but Jack stole the show in their first head-to-head NHL game on Oct. 19 by scoring the lone goal on the power play in the first period of New Jersey's eventual 1-0 win. Having two brothers play in the NHL at the same time is special to begin with, but for one to score his first goal in the first game against the other with plenty of family members in attendance was something else. The brothers also posed for a photo on the ice during warmups, making this quite the family reunion.

Call me a sucker for a proud papa moment. You could almost feel the warmth and love radiating through the screen as Louie DeBrusk, former NHL forward turned Sportsnet reporter, had the rare opportunity to do a pregame interview rink-side with son Jake before the Bruins faced the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Feb. 19. Neither could barely conceal his smile as the journalistic line between reporter and subject quickly melted into a family chat complete with good-natured ribbing. "Well, hey, kiddo, it's nice to have you home for a couple of days," Louie said. Jake jabbed at his dad: "It's nice to see the friends and family -- I kind of get sick of my dad's hunting stories." Louie, a physical player in his day who scored 41 points (24 goals, 17 assists) in 401 games for the Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Phoenix Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks, offered Jake some fatherly advice: "Listen, kiddo, move your feet out there. I don't want to have to say bad things about you tonight." Boston may have won the game that night, but Louie earned the fatherly bragging rights.
