Greatest Moments of NHL Season … So Far: second round, matchup 5

The 2019-20 NHL season had many incredible moments before it was paused on March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, and now fans can decide which one was the best.

The Greatest Moments of the NHL season … So Far is down to 32 entries from the original bracket of 64 with the first round now complete. Fans will vote on one matchup per day, ultimately deciding the greatest moment up until this point.

Fans can vote on Twitter and Instagram each day from noon until 10 a.m. ET the next day. Each day, the winner of that matchup will be revealed, and a new set of moments will go head-to-head.

Though fans will have the ultimate say, two NHL.com staffers will weigh in on the matchup each day to give his or her opinion on which one should advance to the third round.

In the matchup Tuesday, the Vancouver Cancucks retiring the numbers of Henrik and Daniel Sedin defeated the Blues raising their Stanley Cup banner.

The matchup Wednesday has Vegas Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury making an incredible glove save to help preserve a win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 19 going up against Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl becoming the first player to reach 100 points this season with two goals and an assist against the Winnipeg Jets on Feb. 29.

As was the case in the first round, the definition of a great moment needs to be, well, a moment, and Fleury's save here is nothing short of an instant classic. Surely, Maple Leafs forward Nic Petan was already thinking about what to do for his goal-scoring celebration and if it would go viral, with nothing but net to shoot at until Fleury's glove came out of nowhere to forge a viral moment for himself in an eventual 4-2 victory at T-Mobile Arena. Petan got the puck after an initial shot by Toronto forward Ilya Mikheyev hit the crossbar, but was stopped by Fleury, whose patented smile adds a huge exclamation point to the unforgettable save. "Those are the saves you love to play for," Fleury said. "It's fun to do." And even more fun to watch, again and again.

First off, let me say that the save by Fleury was incredible. Everything about it was amazing. However, how many spectacular saves by goalies do we see every season? More than we can count on both hands. And how many times do we see a 100-point scorer? Not very often. Since 2000-01, there have been 43 instances of a player reaching that mark, a number that shrinks to 15 since the 2010-11 season, showing how much the game has changed. When Draisaitl scored his 100th point in his 62nd game, he was on pace to top Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov's total of 128 from last season, which was the most in 23 seasons. Draisaitl has scored at least one point in 56 of 71 games this season including at least four points in five games and at least three points in 14 games. He scored 105 points last season, so he's proven what he is doing is no fluke.
