"Erik suffered ligament damage to his wrist this season that has affected his wrist function," Canucks general manager Jim Benning said in a statement. "Continued treatment and rehabilitation have not improved his condition, and Erik and our Canucks medical team believe surgery offers the best long-term outcome and are confident in a full recovery."
Gudbranson, 24, has a goal and six points in 30 games this season. He did not play in a 4-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday.
"Erik's leadership qualities and strong physical presence will be missed," Benning said. "But this is a decision that best supports a long, productive and healthy career."
The Canucks acquired Gudbranson from the Florida Panthers for forward Jared McCann on May 25. Gudbranson spent his first five NHL seasons in Florida and has 12 goals and 49 assists in 339 NHL games.
