The new arena for the New York Islanders resumed construction Wednesday after being shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"I can confirm that," Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "It's a great sight that it is happening. The most comfortable feeling is that we were ahead of schedule when this all took place. I do not believe there will be any hiccups as far as the delay of when it's proposed to be open, and that's great news."
The arena at Belmont Park is scheduled to open for the 2021-22 NHL season.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled plans on Friday to begin the first phase of reopening the economy on Long Island after Memorial Day. Work on the construction site at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, had been paused since March 27, part of a shutdown of non-essential projects.
The Islanders, who have split home games between Nassau Coliseum and Barclays Center since the start of last season, broke ground Sept. 23, 2019. Cuomo announced Feb. 29 that the Islanders would play all home games next season at the Coliseum.
The NHL season has been paused since March 12, and the League announced its Return to Play Plan on May 26.
