DALLAS -- Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn didn't just lose a teammate on Monday, he also lost a roommate when his brother, defenseman Jordie Benn, was traded to the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Greg Pateryn and a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
"It's tough, you never want to lose a teammate, and when it's your brother it makes it a little bit more tough," Jamie Benn said after the Stars morning skate prior to their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday (8:30 p.m. ET; FS-SW, ROOT, NHL.TV). "We all understand that it's a business and if we had a better season going on here, we wouldn't put ourselves in this situation and we'd be bringing players in instead of losing them."

The brothers were together on Monday when Jordie Benn got the call he was traded.
"I think [Jamie] was more shocked than I was," Jordie Benn said. "He was just like, 'Well, let's start packing up, let's get ready.' I think I was packed and out of the house in an hour. It was a quick turnaround, and now I'm [with the Canadiens]."
"It was pretty hectic. He was out of here pretty quick," Jamie Benn said. "He was just packing his bag and receiving phone calls. I just wished him good luck and was kind of joking around with him. I think we play them in a month, so I told him I'll see him at center ice when the puck drops."
The brothers played together for parts of six seasons in Dallas, with Jordie Benn earning a full-time NHL role during the 2013-14 season.

"It was fun while it lasted, over a span of four or five years here it was great," Jamie Benn said.
Jamie Benn, 27, was drafted by Dallas in 2007, and Jordie, 29, was undrafted before working his way through the minor leagues. Jordie Benn played with Victoria of the ECHL and Allen in the Central Hockey League before he caught on with the Stars as a free agent.
"He definitely worked his way up through the system, it was good to see," Jamie Benn said. "He's a hard working guy and he's got a great opportunity to go win a cup on a great team in a great organization."
Jamie Benn said he'll miss playing with his brother, but acknowledged that the move to Montreal could be the best for him.

"I told him that last night," Jamie Benn said. "Now he can be Jordie Benn and not Jamie Benn's brother. I think this is going to be great for him, and he can move on and move forward with his career. And I'm excited to see what happens with him."
"I get that a lot in Dallas," Jordie Benn said, "and a few of the fans and stuff like that, I'm hidden behind a superstar, which is true, my brother's an amazing player. So yeah, I just get to come here and I get to be Jo-Benn, and not Jamie Benn's brother."
It does create some complications for parents, Heather and Randy Benn who live in Canada, who now have to divide their rooting interests.
"They were shocked, I'm sure like most parents are when their son gets traded," Jamie Benn said. "Maybe they won't be coming down here as much, they'll go see [Jordie] play in Montreal."
