Jared McCann signed a two-year, $5.88 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday. It has an average annual value of $2.94 million.

"It's very exciting," the forward said. "I'm very thankful for the Penguins, the organization, for giving me this chance. I've thought a lot about it. This definitely sets me up for a good future. I'm very thankful for that."
The 24-year-old, who could have become a restricted free agent on Oct. 9, tied his NHL career high with 35 points (14 goals, 21 assists) in 66 games this season and had one assist in three games in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers when Pittsburgh, the No. 5 seed, was eliminated by the No. 12 seed Montreal Canadiens.
"I talk to guys who haven't won a Cup and have been in the League for a lot longer than I have," McCann said. "That's something that I feel like it slips away from your mind when you're a young guy. You always get a crack at it, right? There's not a lot of people out there that have Stanley Cups. I want to be one of those guys. I feel like we have the team to do it."
He scored 17 points (11 goals, six assists) in 32 games with Pittsburgh last season after being acquired in a trade with the Florida Panthers on Feb. 1, 2019.
"I'll be whatever the team needs me to be," McCann said. "Obviously, having a role kind of defines you as a player, but whatever the Penguins need me to do, I'm going to be that guy for them. I feel like I had that opportunity to kind of show what I did this year when we had injuries and stuff like that. I was able to step into a top-six role and contribute, put points up and get wins for this team. Whatever they need me to do, I'll be ready."
Selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the first round (No. 24) of the 2014 NHL Draft, McCann has scored 123 points (52 goals, 71 assists) in 310 games with the Canucks, Panthers and Penguins, with two assists in six playoff games.
"Jared is a good offensive player who can play center or wing," Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said. "We saw improvement in his play this year and feel that there is more upside to his game."
