The forward was hit into the boards by New York Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson during the third period of a 4-3 shootout loss Saturday and appeared to injure his left shoulder but returned to the game. Coach Mike Yeo said Farabee was also injured during thea 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.
Farabee has scored 18 points (11 goals, seven assists) in 33 games. He missed seven games with an upper-body injury after he slid into the boards shoulder-first against the New York Rangers on Dec. 1.
"Something happened yesterday," Flyers coach Mike Yeo said Friday. "I don't want to say that it is or it isn't [related to the Dobson hit]. Obviously things happen. I would say that there's a good chance that it's related to that. But again, something did happen in the game there yesterday."
Farabee was placed on injured reserve, as was center Kevin Hayes, who had surgery Tuesday to have fluid drained from the adductor region of his hip. Hayes is expected to be out 3-4 weeks.
It's the third time since the end of the 2020-21 season that Hayes had surgery to his midsection. He had core muscle surgery in May, and abdominal surgery Sept. 21 sidelined him for the first 12 games of the season.
Hayes aggravated the injury in his second game, against the Calgary Flames on Nov. 16, and missed six games. He played 18 games since returning to the lineup Dec. 1 and scored nine points (three goals, six assists) in 20 games.
The Flyers have seven players on injured reserve: Farabee, Hayes, forwards Sean Couturier (upper body), Derick Brassard (hip), Patrick Brown (knee) and Nate Thompson (shoulder), and defenseman Ryan Ellis (lower body).
Couturier (out since Dec. 18), Hayes, Brassard (missed 21 of past 23 games) and Thompson (out since Nov. 26) were expected to be the top four centers this season. They have played two games together: Nov. 13 and Nov. 16.
"I've been coaching for a while and I haven't really seen anything like this," Yeo said.
Forwards Wade Allison and Jackson Cates were recalled from the taxi squad and were in the lineup for a 6-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, the 11th straight loss for Phiadelphia.
The Flyers (13-20-8) are 0-8-3 during the skid after losing 10 in a row (0-8-2) from Nov. 18-Dec. 18. They are the first team to lose 10 consecutive games twice in the first 40 games of an NHL season, and the first team to lose 10 in a row twice in the same season since the Colorado Avalanche in 2010-11.
