Staal shared high hopes for the Carolina Hurricanes (3-0-0) becoming a legitimate Stanley Cup contender this season. Theyw won the Metropolitan Division last season but lost the Eastern Conference Second Round to the New York Rangers in seven games.
"I feel like we're a good enough team to win, so why not?" Staal said. "Will things have to fall into place? Usually yes. But, yeah, we are a contender. We're a team that can really pull it off."
Domi has one goal in three games after signing a one-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 13. He had 39 points (11 goals, 28 assists) in 72 regular-season games for the Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets last season, and six points (three goals, three assists) in 14 Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Hurricanes. The 27-year-old was traded to the Hurricanes on March 21 in a three-team deal involving the Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers. He said playing with Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane should help his scoring numbers go up.
"I'd like to start scoring again," said Domi, whose NHL career-high is 28 goals for the Montreal Canadiens in 2018-19. "I'm going to be playing with 'Kaner' this year. I think someone is going to have to shoot between the two of us, and I think it's probably going to be me, let the Hall of Famer make his plays and do his thing. I'm excited to play with a guy like that, learn from him."
