The contract is for $42 million, an average annual value of $6 milllion, according to ESPN.
Though Okposo had played for the New York Islanders his entire career, he knew he'd be somewhere else next season. General manager Garth Snow said June 17 on SiriusXM he would not re-sign the 28-year-old right wing, who completed the final season of a five-year contract in 2015-16.
New York took Okposo in the first round (No. 7) of the 2006 NHL Draft, and he joined the Islanders near the end of the 2007-08 season. His 64 points in 2015-16 were second on the team behind center John Tavares, and his 22 goals were third behind Tavares and forward Brock Nelson. Okposo has also become one of the NHL's top guns in the shootout; he's 10-for-20 in the past two seasons with six game-deciding goals. For his career, he has 139 goals and 230 assists in 529 games.
There's nothing fancy about Okposo's game. He has decent speed, enough size (6-foot, 217 pounds) to avoid being pushed around, an excellent shot and a nose for the net. He's an underrated playmaker (42 assists in two of the past three seasons), especially on the power play. His main liability is that his defensive game is average at best.
