Playing in a 1-0 win against the New York Islanders in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Semifinals, Point failed to match Philadelphia Flyers forward Reggie Leach, who scored a goal in 10 straight playoff games in 1976.
"I'm not thinking about it," Point said after scoring in an eighth straight game, an 8-0 Game 5 win Monday. "It's playoff time, and personal stats don't mean anything. It's about wins. ... It doesn't happen without teammates. I've had a lot of goals these playoffs that have been great setups or tap-ins, so it's been a group effort."
Point leads the playoffs with 14 goals and has scored 19 points in 18 games. Leach scored 24 points (19 goals, five assists) in 16 games in and is tied with Jari Kurri for the most goals in a postseason; Kurri scored 19 with the Edmonton Oilers in 1985.
Point led last postseason with 14 goals in 23 games to help the Lightning win the Stanley Cup. He has scored 36 goals and 70 points in 62 NHL postseason games and is second in Tampa Bay history in playoff goals, five behind teammate Nikita Kucherov, who has scored 41 in 123 games.
"He's a goal-scorer," Leach said of Point. "He doesn't get himself into trouble and he doesn't get himself tied up too much. That's the big thing about good goal-scorers."
Leach scored six goals in seven games for the Flyers against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1976 NHL Quarterfinals, and nine goals in five games against the Boston Bruins in the Semifinals, including a record-tying five in a 6-3 win in Game 5 that eliminated Boston. He scored four goals in four games against the Montreal Canadiens, who swept the Flyers in the Cup Final. Leach won the Conn Smythe Trophy voted as the most valuable player of the playoffs.
