Edler 12.12

Alexander Edler was placed on injured reserve by the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.

The defenseman sustained a lower-body injury in a 2-1 win against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday when he was checked by forward Brandon Duhaime at 2:40 of the first period.
Kings coach Todd McLellan said after the game it will be a long-term injury for Edler.
"It [stinks] having him down," Los Angeles forward Alex Iafallo said Saturday. "At the same time, I think all the boys chipped in. Losing a player like that, 'Eddy' has been awesome for us the whole year. When that happens, we've got to stay solid defensively with five [defensemen] and I think everybody did their job tonight."
Edler has scored 11 points (one goal, 10 assists) and averaged 18:26 of ice time in 26 games this season, his first with the Kings after signing a one-year contract July 28. The 35-year-old played his first 15 NHL seasons for the Vancouver Canucks.
Defenseman Christian Wolanin was recalled from Ontario of the American Hockey League. He was claimed off waivers from the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 1 and has played one NHL game this season.
Edler would be the third Kings defenseman to be out for a significant length of time this season. Drew Doughty missed 16 games because of a knee contusion before returning Nov. 30, and Sean Walker is out for the season after tearing his ACL and MCL on Oct. 25.
"Eddy has arguably been our best defenseman when Drew was out, and you lose him a minute into the game, and Drew's still finding his game and in the penalty box, it's not an easy task for four relatively young defensemen," McLellan said. "They did a tremendous job, and including the goaltender."
The Kings (12-10-4) play at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; BSSUN, BSW, ESPN+, NHL LIVE).
