Hurricanes rally for OT victory after Kings blow 3-goal lead in 3rd

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sebastian Aho scored on the power play with 54 seconds left in overtime, and the Carolina Hurricanes rallied for a 5-4 win against the Los Angeles Kings at PNC Arena on Tuesday.

Aho one-timed a pass from Brent Burns in the right face-off circle to extend his goal streak to five games (eight goals).
The Hurricanes came back with three goals in the third period to extend their winning streak to six games.
Burns had a goal and an assist, Andrei Svechnikov had two assists, and Frederik Andersen made 17 saves for the Hurricanes (33-9-8), who extended their point streak to nine games (8-0-1) and visit the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.
"It was a great third [period]," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "Give them credit for not packing it in. It's 4-1 going into the third, not playing very well. We decided to put a good effort up and got rewarded."

Adrian Kempe scored twice, Anze Kopitar had a goal and two assists, and Pheonix Copley made 25 saves for the Kings (28-18-7), who finished 3-2-1 on a six-game road trip and played their last game until Feb. 11 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Los Angeles scored four times in the second period to take a 4-1 lead.
"We knew they were going to have a push. We thought we could handle it," Kings coach Todd McLellan said. "I actually thought we didn't play a terrible period. The first two periods, I thought we played an outstanding game."
The Hurricanes made it 4-2 at 3:27 of the third period when Paul Stastny drove the net to score on a rebound.
Jordan Staal tipped Brett Pesce's shot from the right point to make it 4-3 at 9:54, and Teuvo Teravainen's one-timer on a power play tied it 4-4 at 12:31.
"Obviously a huge goal by [Stastny] at first, then I felt like Staal's line got us going," Aho said. "The rest of us kind of followed. Huge goal by [Teravainen] on the power play, and obviously a good OT."

Burns gave Carolina a 1-0 lead at 13:27 of the first period with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle after Svechnikov made a short backhand pass.
Kempe tied it 1-1 at 1:51 of the second period. Andersen stopped Kopitar with a poke check at the top of the crease, but the Kings captain gathered the puck behind the goal line before centering to Kempe for a tap-in.
Kevin Fiala gave Los Angeles a 2-1 lead at 11:34 before Kempe's second goal extended it to 3-1 at 14:21.
The Kings pushed the lead to 4-1 at 15:21 six seconds into a power play when Jaret Anderson-Dolan one-touched a pass from Drew Doughty to Kopitar in front for his 16th of the season.
"We were just playing hard, playing the way the coaches wanted us to play," Doughty said. "We were making good passes, scoring big goals. That was a really good second period by us, but I guess the bottom line is we just messed it up in the third."

Three of Carolina's past four wins have come in overtime. Martin Necas scored in overtime in a 3-2 win against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday and again in 5-4 win against the San Jose Sharks on Friday, when the Hurricanes scored twice in the last 1:37 of the third.
"These guys need a break," Brind'Amour said. "You see how hard they play all year. That could have easily been, we've had a good run, we've done pretty well. They gave it what they had. I appreciate that about the group."
NOTES: Burns extended his point streak to six games (three goals, four assists). … Aho holds the Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers record for overtime goals with eight. … It was the fifth three-goal, third-period comeback in Hurricanes history. … Staal won 16 of 22 face-offs (72.7 percent). … Andersen has won all six starts since missing 29 games with a lower-body injury. … Doughty became the first defenseman in Kings history to get 600 points, and his 112th multipoint game passed Rob Blake for the most by a Kings defenseman.
