Kempe nets 2 goals in a 5-2 win over the Avalanche

DENVER-- Adrian Kempe and Phillip Danault each scored twice for the Los Angeles Kings in their fifth straight win, 5-2 against the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena on Thursday.

Anze Kopitar had three assists for the Kings (38-20-8), who have won six of seven. Joonas Korpisalo made 28 saves for his second win in as many starts since being acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 2.
Los Angeles remained tied with the Vegas Golden Knights for first place in the Pacific Division. Vegas, which defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in overtime on Thursday, has a game in hand.
"I thought we were resilient," Kings coach Todd McLellan said. "Everybody found a way to contribute. We played with a high level of pace, which you have to against this team. Got outstanding goaltending when we needed it and some timely scoring. So, as we leave here, we're happy with the group as a whole; not just two or three players, but the whole group."

Evan Rodrigues and Nathan MacKinnon scored, and Alexandar Georgiev made 26 saves for the Avalanche (35-22-6), who have lost four of five (1-3-1).
Colorado remained in third place in the Central Division, five points behind the Minnesota Wild, who have two games in hand, for second. The Avalanche are just one point ahead of the Winnipeg Jets, who hold the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.
"I think that we have another level yet against these good teams that we have to get to," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "With the passion of our game, the intensity of our game, the competitiveness in those important areas, net front, we weren't good enough. We played pretty smart. The scoring chances against weren't real high. I just didn't like a couple of the ones we gave up. They just seemed too easy."
Kempe made it 1-0 at 8:37 of the first period when he finished a 2-on-1, circle-to-circle pass from Kopitar.
"He's been hot for the majority of the season," Kopitar said. "He's [hit] a couple bumps in the road, but always a safe bet to give him the puck."
Gabriel Vilardi extended the lead to 2-0 at 17:10 when he sniped a shot from the left circle short side over the shoulder of Georgiev.
Rodrigues cut it to 2-1 when he deflected a point shot from Samuel Girard at 14:59 of the second period.
"We had a handful of shifts like that," Bednar said. "But that particular shift, we extended some good o-zone time. We were shooting. We had good intent to get to the net, and we end up getting a deflection out of it."
Kempe made it 3-1 just 24 seconds into the third period when his backhand shot from just above the crease caromed off Georgiev's stick and fluttered into the net.
"That's huge because you're back on your heels a little bit. They've got some energy, a clean sheet, their building, their fans behind them," McLellan said of the fast goal. "So, to quiet things down a little bit was a benefit to us quickly in that third."

MacKinnon made it 3-2 on the power play at 4:24 when his snap shot from above the right circle went past the glove of Korpisalo.
"Just feel like every mistake we made, they scored on. I thought we actually created a fair amount of chances," MacKinnon said. "It's not fun, for sure. You get one and then, I don't know how long after that, they made it 4-2. So it's kind of out of reach [at] 4-2 halfway through the third."
Danault made it 4-2 just 15 seconds later at 4:39 when he deflected Jordan Spence's shot from the point, then scored an empty-net goal at 17:25 for the 5-2 final. The second goal was his 100th in the NHL.
"It's huge, obviously. (The) other team scores, so obviously it's a big momentum change," Kempe said. "When we can get a goal back right away, it's huge. 'Phil' got a big one there for the team that we're all pumped [about] on the bench. That was huge, and it shows that all four lines can play against anyone."
NOTES: MacKinnon extended his home goal streak to eight, tying the Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques record (Joe Sakic in 2000-01 and Michel Goulet in 1983-84). … Kings forward Quinton Byfield extended his assist streak to five games (five assists). Byfield's is the longest assist streak this season by any skater 20 years old or younger. … Kempe has five points (four goals, one assist) in his past three games. … Trevor Moore finished plus-1 with one assist and two shots in 13:31 of ice time after missing six games with an upper-body injury.
