Mackenzie Blackwood signed a two-year, $4.7 million contract with the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. It has an average annual value of $2.35 million.
The 26-year-old goalie was acquired in a trade with the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday for a sixth-round pick in the 2023 Upper Deck NHL Draft. Blackwood was an unrestricted free agent after he did not receive a qualifying offer from the Sharks prior to the deadline Friday.
"Mackenzie is a big (6-foot-4, 225 pounds), athletic goaltender with a lot of potential and upside," Sharks general manager Mike Grier said. "He will be a good addition to our goaltender group."
Blackwood was 10-6-2 with a 3.20 goals-against average and .893 save percentage in 22 regular-season games (20 starts) last season and did not play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He is 65-57-18 with a 2.97 GAA, .906 save percentage and eight shutouts in 152 regular-season games (143 starts), all with the Devils
The Sharks also signed forward Kyle Burroughs to a three-year, $3.3 million contract ($1.1 million AAV) on Saturday. The 27-year-old had five points (two goals, three assists) and 62 penalty minutes in 48 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season. He has 11 points (three goals, eight assists) and 106 penalty minutes in 95 NHL games with the Canucks and Colorado Avalanche.
San Jose (22-44-16) finished 29th in the NHL standings last season and has failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the past four seasons.
