matthews skate blade mccabe

Auston Matthews got off the ice with a little help from his friends.

The Toronto Maple Leafs forward lost his right skate blade deep in the zone and was stranded until teammate Jake McCabe rushed over to lend a helping hand.

McCabe grabbed Matthews by the hand and started pulling him toward the Toronto bench like a tow truck getting a car off the road.

After pulling Matthews from deep in the zone to near the blue line, McCabe went from pull to push, shoving Matthews toward the red line.

"You see it happen once in a while, but it was definitely interesting to go through," Matthews said. "It's never happened to me before - as soon as I went to plant, I fell and went into the boards. I didn't know what to do, but luckily (McCabe) was there to get me to the bench."

From there, Matthews did his best to slide and push himself toward the bench with one skate. Defenseman Conor Timmins offered his stick to help pull Matthews in with at least three other players grabbing Matthews as if he was a man overboard.

A couple of great assists from the Maple Leafs without a puck ever crossing a goal line.
