Mitchell Marner scores in Maple Leafs win

TORONTO-- Mitchell Marner scored his first NHL goal, and Tyler Bozak had two assists to help the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-1 win against the Boston Bruins at Air Canada Centre on Saturday.
"It's pretty exciting. Every kid dreams of that puck going into the back of the net," Marner, the fourth pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, said. "Especially doing it in front of your hometown crowd. It's something I think I'm going to remember for the rest of my life."

Connor Brown, James van Riemsdyk and Milan Michalek scored for the Maple Leafs. Nikita Zaitsev got his first NHL assist on Marner's goal, and goaltender Frederik Andersen made 24 saves to get his first win with Toronto.
"I worked hard the last few days in practice with [Maple Leafs goaltending coach Steve Briere]," Andersen said. "I think that had to do with how I played on the ice."
David Pastrnak scored for the Bruins. He has three goals in the first two games. Anton Khudobin made 20 saves in his season debut for Boston.
"I felt all right but my start wasn't good," Khudobin said. "Those first three goals, I was frustrated, I would say. But in the second period I found my game. There weren't a lot of shots, too, and I started feeling the puck more."

Brown made it 1-0 by picking up a rebound from Matt Hunwick's shot from the point at 2:14 of the first period. Marner made it 2-0 at 11:56, picking up a feed from Bozak in the neutral zone and beating Khudobin on the blocker side.
Van Riemsdyk made it 3-0 at 13:13, cutting in from the wing to the high slot for a backhand past Khudobin's glove.
It was van Riemsdyk's first goal of the season, and first since switching jersey numbers from 21 to 25. The Maple Leafs retired 11 numbers, including No. 21 for Borje Salming, during a centennial celebration prior to the game.
"I've worn that since probably 10-and-under ... it always feels a little different since I've been wearing that for the last however many years now, but it's a nice change and maybe signals a bit of a change in things that are going on around here too," van Riemsdyk said. "Maybe a different start with a different number isn't a bad thing."
Pastrnak beat Andersen on the blocker side at 17:35 of the first period.
Michalek scored at 3:56 of the third period, tipping a point shot from Morgan Rielly.

Goal of the game

Marner took a long-range shot after skating by Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo. In receiving the pass from Bozak, Marner tapped the puck between his feet to bring it in front of him.

Save of the game

Andersen made a pad save on Pastrnak from the slot at 15:00 of the second period. Pastrnak received a quick pass from Brad Marchand, who fed it from behind the Maple Leafs net.

Unsung moment of the game

Marner generated two scoring opportunities before Khudobin was forced to trip him in front of the net at 11:32 of the second period. It generated a power play for Toronto and an ovation from the crowd.

Highlight of the game

Brown got away from Bruins forward Matt Beleskey for the first goal of the game by skating around him in the Boston zone. Brown was freed up after Hunwick's initial shot, and he skated into the slot and beat Khudobin. "First there was a scramble and I'm thinking my guy will clear the puck or whatever," Khudobin said. "I wasn't expecting the shot, and [the] guy just came in and tapped in."

Need to know

The Maple Leafs are the first team in the NHL expansion era (since 1967-68) to have rookies (Auston Matthews, Brown, Marner) score their first six goals in a season. Matthews had four in a 5-4 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.
