The Seattle Kraken's first-ever first-round draft pick is in, and he's arrived.
Forward Matty Beniers agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level contract with the Kraken on Sunday. Hours later, he touched down in the Emerald City. "Hey Kraken fans, Matty Beniers here," the forward said. "Just got into Seattle. Super excited to be here. Super excited to see the city, the rink, all the facilities and meet all the guys. I'm super happy to get started and can't wait to see you all."
The Kraken selected Beniers with the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. There is no set date for Beniers' NHL debut yet, but the 19-year-old practiced with the team Monday. Fans got a look at him in his new threads on social media.
Beniers was a sophomore at Michigan before signing with the Kraken. He joins Michigan teammates Owen Power, Kent Johnson and Nick Blankenburg in the NHL after all signed contracts since the overtime loss to Denver in the Frozen Four on April 7. The anticipation for Monday's announcement started building on Sunday, when Beniers shared some artwork made for him by the Kraken Brand Team.
The art was of Beniers, clad in full Michigan uniform, skating up to the city on a frozen body of water looking at the skyline featuring the Seattle Great Wheel and world famous Space Needle.
