LAK@MTL: 1993 Stanley Cup champion Habs team honored

MONTREAL -- Vincent Damphousse, Kirk Muller and Guy Carbonneau were among the members of the 1992-93 Stanley Cup champions Montreal Canadiens honored in a ceremony prior to the home opener against the Los Angeles Kings at Bell Centre on Thursday.

Defenseman Lyle Odelein was also on hand for the reunion after he had a multi-organ transplant on April 4.
"It was emotional because what he went through is pretty amazing and I was very close to Odie when we played," Damphousse said.
Odelein went out for dinner with some of his former teammates Wednesday.
"I don't think I've really changed that much, it was just that I had a five percent chance of living at one time," Odelein said. "Put it this way, I just know there's a God out there because I could have went either way, and I didn't, and I owe a lot of credit to my wife and family for that."

Jacques Demers, who coached the 1992-93 Canadiens, had a stroke in 2016 and further complications later that year. Sitting in a wheelchair, he was given a standing ovation.
"It's awesome, I mean, it means everything," Carbonneau said about Demers' presence. "I think when you ask everybody who was a part of this team Jacques was probably the number one guy that came to mind when we won. Everybody was happy for him, everybody was happy for what he did for us, and obviously when he got sick a couple of years ago everybody felt really, really bad.
"I had the chance to go see him a couple of times so I know how he is and I'm sure today is a big day for him."
The Canadiens tied a Stanley Cup Playoffs record in 1993 with an 11-game winning streak that included seven overtime wins after losing their first two games against the Quebec Nordiques. It was their record 24th Stanley Cup title.
Montreal defeated Los Angeles in five games in the final, with each of their first three wins in overtime.
Hall of Fame goalie Patrick Roy, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1993 as the Most Valuable Player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, greeted the crowd with a video message because he could not attend the ceremony. Roy is coach and GM of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
