Caufield stays hot under St. Louis, pots game winner

PHILADELPHIA -- Cole Caufield scored at 2:10 of overtime, and the Montreal Canadiens rallied for a 4-3 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Sunday.

Caufield jumped onto the ice on a line change, took a pass from Rem Pitlick, and scored with a shot from the right face-off circle.
Pitlick scored shorthanded with 43 seconds left in the third period to tie the game 3-3.
It was the second straight night the Canadiens (16-35-8) came from behind in the third period to earn a point. They trailed 3-1 against the Seattle Kraken on Saturday and scored two goals to tie it before losing 4-3 in the shootout.
"I think we kind of started out slow," Nick Suzuki said. "Always tough going back to back. Had a late night travel, so I think we were a little sluggish at the start but definitely earned that win."

Suzuki scored twice, and Pitlick had a goal and an assist for Montreal. Sam Montembeault made 25 saves in the second of back-to-back starts; he made 31 against Seattle on Saturday.
Claude Giroux scored for his 900th NHL point for Philadelphia (18-30-11). Carter Hart made 31 saves.
"We're going to have to keep finding ways to get players to understand that you can play the way you want to play or you can play winning hockey," Flyers coach Mike Yeo said. "Our defensive game is game is getting better ... that's nice, that's what you have to do, that's what you're supposed to do. And there's a way to play with the puck where you're not turning it over and giving free ice and freebies to a team that obviously has skill. We still refuse to do that."
Kevin Hayes gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at 7:00 of the first period. James van Riemsdyk skated the puck into the Canadiens zone and passed across the ice to Travis Sanheim. The defenseman passed through the slot Hayes, who scored from the right post.
Suzuki tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 2:18 of the second period.
Giroux put the Flyers ahead 2-1 at 7:11 when he scored after taking a pass from Morgan Frost and walking the puck around Montembeault.

Suzuki tied it 2-2 at 8:18 when he scored on his rebound.
Cam Atkinson scored to make it 3-2 at 2:41 of the third period.
Montembeault made six saves to keep the Canadiens in the game, and said he appreciated the trust the coaching staff showed in him.
"It was a long game too on Saturday so it's fun to see that the coaches trust me to go out on a back to back like that," he said. "I was really happy and I played a great game."
The Flyers had a power play when Chris Wideman was called for interference at 19:00, but they lost a face-off in the Canadiens zone, and the play ended with Pitlick scoring the tying goal.
"Right now, we're in a deep hole," Giroux said. "We're just finding ways to lose right now. Our whole game we played pretty solid, had a lot of chances, did a lot of good things. End of the game we always find a way to lose the game."

MTL@PHI: Pitlick ties it short-handed with :43 left

It's the sixth straight game the Flyers have been tied or within one goal during the third period, but they have two wins during that span.
Yeo said there could be lineup changes when the Flyers play next, against the Nashville Predators on Thursday.
"Take ice time away, put guys on the fourth line, scratch guys if we have to," he said. "I don't know if we have enough [space under the NHL salary cap] to call guys up. This is veteran players we're going to have to do it to."
