The 21-year-old for the Detroit Red Wings led rookie defensemen in assists (43) and points (50) and was second with seven goals, one behind Martin Fehervary of the Washington Capitals. His 21 power-play points, four game-winning goals and 187 shots on goal led first-year players at the position, he led all rookies in time on ice per game (23:02) and was fourth in scoring.
Seider led Detroit in total ice time (1,889:22), playing all situations. He was second on the Red Wings in power-play time per game (2:53) and fourth in shorthanded time per game (1:53), fourth in points and was the third Detroit rookie defenseman with at least 50 points in one season (Reed Larson, 60, 1977-78; Nicklas Lidstrom, 60, 1991-92).
He is the sixth Red Wings player to win the award and first since goalie Roger Crozier in 1964-65.
"Overall, very excited just to share that moment with my significant others and my agent and just very, very grateful for everything that happened tonight," Seider said.
Anaheim Ducks center Trevor Zegras was second and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Michael Bunting was third as the other finalists for the award, which was voted on by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association before the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Seider was also named to the NHL All-Rookie Team on Tuesday.
