Subban was helped to the locker room for a brief time but returned to finish Nashville's victory that tied the best-of-7 series 2-2 with Game 5 at Pittsburgh on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, SN, TVA Sports).
He played a game-high 25:09, with two other blocked shots to go with the one that left him hobbled.
"It just kind of hit me where I didn't have any padding, so you know, I mean, that's it," Subban said. "It hurts. … You just come back in the game and try to work through it."
It seems the topic of the defenseman's apparently unpleasant breath, a subplot to this series after Game 3 on Saturday, still has life. Subban was asked after Game 4 about leaving Bridgestone Arena after the morning skate with a couple of large bottles of mouthwash in a shopping bag.
"I didn't bring it to the rink, it was just there in my stall," he said. "A lot of guys have been saying my breath has been tough, but I think it's because I have a high-protein diet. No, seriously, a high-protein diet translates to bad breath, that's what I hear. But I can't afford to take protein out of my diet now, so people are just going to have to suck it up for the next week or so."
